Halloween week

Hello parents,
A quick update for you all...

This Friday will be our Hallowe'en celebration.  Students can bring their costumes to wear during the afternoon.  We will have a school wide parade, followed by a celebration in class.  Anyone who would like to bring snacks can do so.  There are no allergies in the class.  Anyone who brings a snack will be sharing with the class, but you do not need to bring enough for every student.  It would be great to have a range of healthy and 'fun' snacks.  Some great Hallowe'en themed healthy snacks ideas are cheese and crackers, oranges, orange peppers, orange juice, carrots.
Students have been reminded to not bring any weapons as a part of their costume, or anything too scary, as we will be touring all the younger classes on the parade.

Math - We have started a short unit on telling time.  A great way to help your child practice this skills is by talking about duration .
-Dinner is at 6:00, how many minutes are there before that time?
-Hockey starts in 25 minutes.  What time would that be at?
-The lesson lasts for 80 minutes, what time should I pick you up at?
-Bedtime is at 8:45.  It will take you 5 minutes to brush your teeth and get changed.  How much time do you have to play before that should happen?

ELA - Students have been enjoying our Global Read Aloud book "Fish in a Tree".  We have started to make a few connections with other classes, and will even be Skyping with a few of them next week.  It will be great to hear what other classes are saying about the book.

Sciences Humaines - We are almost finished our unit on Canadian Geography, but will also be revisiting it throughout the year.  Most recently, students have been looking at Canadian regions. (Rocky mountains/Pacific coast, Prairies, North, Lowlands of St. Lawrence, Atlantic region, Canadian shield)

FLA - Students have been working hard on their Dictée sentences in class.  Be sure to ask them the difference between a 'nom propre' (proper noun) and 'nom commun' (common noun) and what it means when you say that a word is a verb or an adjective.  Understanding the pieces of a sentence in French will help them when we formally start our work on French writing.

Thank you for all of the pictures of Canada that have come in.  Our map is looking great.  Keep them coming!  On our map we have also been tracking our distance on the stationary bike.  We have made it to Thunder Bay.  The next stop is in approximately 700 km in Sault Ste-Marie!
